Did you know there is a healthier version of those yummy little oatmeal packets from the store?

Yes it true! You can still have the convenient little packets but without as much sugar and you get to customize the ingredients to suit your needs.

I don’t have a lot of kids left at home, just one actually, but I do have a very hungry husband. That man can polish off a lot of oatmeal, eggs, milk, pizza, roast …. well you get the idea. Funny thing is he is skinny as a rail! Yes I’m jealous.

In short I would end up spending a lot of money on instant oatmeal if not for this recipe!

I try to be as frugal as possible, what with grocery prices rising all the time. Even for a family of 3 the food bill can be outrageous.

Not to mention that this way you get to leave out all those “mystery ingredients” that would probably be better if we didn’t eat.

The ingredients are simple. Quick oats, salt, brown sugar, cinnamon, and powdered milk. Feel free to add dried apple, raisins, nuts, etc.  Many times I have dried apples, peaches or other fruit that I keep on hand, because I have a dehydrator that I use frequently. This is a great way to save even more cash by the way! Buy your fruit when its on sale, or use what you have from the garden or orchard. Dehydrated food lasts a very long time if kept properly. This recipe makes up to 24 packets of oatmeal, twice as much as what you get in the box. You can make them bigger if you like, for someone with a bigger appetite, ahem, hubby dearest.

All you need is some snack size zip bags, and a container to store them in when finished. Here is the recipe:

10 cups quick oats

1 tsp salt

1 – 1 1/2 cups brown sugar

1 cup dried milk

2 tsp cinnamon

Mix ingredients in large bowl and divide into snack bags. Simple as that! It’s a win win situation, saves money, clean eating, still convenient.

Well I hope you find this post helpful, we certainly do!
