Today is one cold, and I do mean cold day! It’s three degrees outside here in Southwest MN. and  I think we are beginning to get cabin fever!

You all know I love to make natural products, to use on my family, and to clean with. In the next few posts, I’m going to do a series of tutorials on some natural cleaning products you can make yourself at home, and

1. Save some money!

2.Save your health!

3. Make your home sparkle!

One thing that is very easy to find, and very effective is white vinegar…. Now before you shrink back in disgust hear me out! Most people don’t want their house smelling like a salad, me included, but I like to add herbs and essential oils to my vinegar to

1.Enhance the cleaning power.

2.Best of all, enhance the smell!

Today we are making Lavender Cleaning Solution, and carpet freshener.

Vinegar in itself is great for cleaning, cutting grease, and having  antibacterial, and antifungal properties. It breaks down the minerals in water which cause water spots and filmy residue on mirrors, sinks, tubs, etc.

It is safe to use on floors, glass, tiles, fabric, chrome, basically anywhere EXCEPT marble and granite.

Those are minerals and thus the vinegar could cause pitting or etching.

Lavender is a cleansing herb which has been used for centuries. The name itself is derived from the Latin word  lavare, which means to wash.

It has been used to drive away moths, fleas and other insects, so get those closet corners and such! I absolutely love the scent of lavender, to me it just smells clean and fresh. I love to make these cleaners, especially this time of year, because we are shut up indoors and it is so refreshing to have your home smell like a bit of summer!

I pack a clean jar half way with Lavender buds which I buy at Mountain Rose Herbs. https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/products/lavender-flowers/profile

I then fill the jar with white vinegar, available at any grocery store. You can see that the vinegar turns a lovely purple after sitting for a week, this means that all the goodness of the Lavender has been absorbed by the vinegar!

I place this jar in a warm place for about 1 week. To make your cleaning solution, take 2 ounces of the lavender oxymel  (this is the technical word for your herbal vinegar infusion.)

Add to a quart size spray bottle and fill to the top with water. I like to add 10-20 drops of Lavender essential oil. Young Living has a great one!

This makes a very good bathroom and kitchen cleaning spray. You can use directly on counter tops with no danger of contaminating your food with dangerous chemicals.

Next I made some Lavender Carpet Freshener.

For this all you need is baking soda and Lavender essential oil. I like to grind a few Lavender buds in  my coffee grinder to add in, I just think it adds to the fragrance.

Add one box of baking soda to a 1 quart jar, along with the ground Lavender buds (optional).

Add 20 to 30 drops of your essential oil and shake vigorously.

This works great to freshen your room and if you have pets, it can help deter fleas.

If you didn’t know it, the cover of your parmesean cheese container fits perfectly onto a regular mouth quart jar! Instant shaker for your carpet freshener!
